How long will a pad last?

The function of a pad printing pad is to transfer ink from the etch on a pad printing plate (cliché) to the product being printed. Pads are made from silicone rubber. The reason for this is because solvent based inks do not adhere to the pad. As a result, the ink is easily transferred to the product. This ability allows for the ink to easy transfer to the product and re-usability. Pad printing inks are either one- or two- component inks. As a result, the inks are either mixed with solvent and hardener. Solvents, hardeners, and constant compression and decompression of the silicone pad eventually degrade the pad material over time. When the pad is worn out, it has reached it's life span.

Every pad printing pad has a limited lifespan, but proper care can help extend its longevity.

Therefore, it is advisable to clean the pads between printing shifts, and pad printing ink should never be left on a pad overnight. An effective method for cleaning is to utilize clear packing tape. Simply use the tape to remove any residual ink stuck to the pad, and then cover or store the pad overnight.
